Stand Up for Science Publishes Perspective on Bond Market and Implications for US Future

Science and technology are the source of solutions to many of America's most vexing problems - we can't afford not to make those investments.

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, August 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Today, Stand Up for Science published a new perspective paper, “What the Bond Market Disruption Means for Rebuilding American Tech Policy,” in Tech Policy Press.

Author Cole Donovan, Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Stand Up for Science Foundation, writes about weakness in the U.S. bond market and the ballooning national debt, which has now surpassed $40 trillion, and what this all means for science policy in the future. Donovan, who previously wrote about rebuilding science policy in the post-Trump era, warns that current market indications, paired with ongoing reductions in science and research funding, staffing, and infrastructure, complicate rebuilding efforts.

“From cancer to extreme heat, science and technology is the source of solutions to many of America's most vexing problems. We can't afford not to make those investments. With budget hawks warning about higher taxes and budget cuts, advocates need to engage directly to make the case for our country's future,” said Donovan.

“The US has come out of dire fiscal situations before, though not without sacrifice... American citizens need to know what is being asked of them, what it will cost, and the consequences of inaction. The blowback against data centers should serve as a warning of what will happen if policymakers impose financial and physical costs on society without earning the public’s trust,” Donovan writes in the paper.
