Chairman Babin Issues Statement Following Briefing on AI Agent Cyber Incident

(Washington, D.C.) – House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Brian Babin issued the following statement after a bipartisan, Committee-wide briefing with representatives from Hugging Face, METR, OpenAI, and Anthropic regarding security incidents initially disclosed by Hugging Face in July, as well as additional incidents reported more recently. The briefing provided Committee members an opportunity to assess these events, their broader implications for AI development and deployment, and potential policy considerations.

"I thank these company representatives for appearing before Committee members and for today’s productive discussion surrounding this incident," said Chairman Babin. "As AI becomes increasingly capable, we can promote the development of trustworthy and reliable systems without sacrificing the innovation that gives America a competitive edge. I look forward to continued engagement with AI and emerging technology companies as we navigate this evolving landscape. Like any new technology, AI presents both risks and opportunities. Our overarching goal remains clear: ensuring that America—not the Chinese Communist Party—leads the global AI race."
